Flying Wall
13th June 2010
Kolhoff-Haus, Berlin, Potsdamer Platz
The Panoramapunkt on the top floor of the Kollhoff Building overlooking Potsdamer Platz was officially opened with a spectacular event. Around 1,000 spectators and a large media contingent were present as a helicopter, carrying a 750 kg section of the Berlin Wall, took to the skies. The section of the Wall, provided by VisibleWall, was then installed on the 24th floor of the Kollhoff Building at a height of around 90 metres. It now completes the new exhibition ‘Berliner Blicke’ dedicated to the history of Potsdamer Platz.
Joachim Gauck, pastor, former civil rights activist and, at the time, a candidate for the Federal Presidency, became the patron of this section from Visible Wall. He signed it and, in a very personal speech, shared his historical perspective on the Berlin Wall as an enduring symbol for peace.
A porcelain miniature of the Wall, signed by him, will also form part of the exhibition ‘Berliner Blicke’.
